#perl example of index and rindex function
$bigString = 'Anything and everything.';
$littleString = 'thing';
#get the first occurance
$posn = index ($bigString, $littleString);
print $posn;
print "\n";

#get the last occurance
$posn = rindex ($bigString, $littleString);
print $posn;

Output:
