#perl exmale of greedy/non-greedy match
$_ = 'eat green peas, eat mushy peas.';
#.* finds largest match
/eat.*peas/;
print $&;

print "\n";

#.*? finds smallest match
/eat.*?peas/;
print $&;

Output:
1
2
eat green peas, eat mushy peas
eat green peas
