The database called “keystore” can be used to manage a repository of keys and the certificates. Keystore are available to applications that need data for authentication, encryptions or signing purpose. The java.security.KeyStore have many implementations from different providers.

The default keystone formats provided by Sun Microsystems is called “jks”.

java.security.KeyStore.getDefaultType();

There are other keystone formats available.

  • “jceks” is an a keystone format with much stronger encryption than “jks”.
  • “pkcs12” is a format based on the RSA PKCS12 Personal Information Exchange Syntax Standard.
